So, there has been alot of buzz in the Black salons regarding Dominican hairstylists. According to an article released by The Wall Street Journal entitled, Much to do about straightening hair, they stated that Black stylist better beware of the rivals. While many African American stylist rely on chemical relaxers to straighten hair, many are saying the "Dominican technique" will extend the life on an individual's hair, therefore reducing the amount of relaxers. They also have lower prices, way cheaper than your average hair salon.
Another reason patrons aren't frequenting black hair salons is the gossip and unprofessionalism. Honestly dolls, we don't come to the salon to hear you air your dirty laundry over a press and curl. And maybe its because stylist are reverting back to kitchen 'dos and forgetting the fundamentals of beauty school.
Now the "Dominican technique" is commonly known as the Dominican Blow Out. The Dominican Blow Out consist of washing and deep conditioning of your hair. Then your hair is roller set and you are placed under a hooded dryer. After you are dry the rollers are taken out the stylist uses a round brush and a handheld blowdryer w/concentrator nozzle to straighten the hair. So ALOT of heat is put into this method, although the hair does come out quite shiny and bouncy. Honestly, being of African American and Creole descent, I know that constantly putting this much heat on my hair would damage it...but then again so does perms. Everything should be done in moderation.
Do I think Dominican stylists are better than African American stylists? I would say that every one has their own talent. Now African American stylist do need to remember that this is a business and you don't have to drop your prices if you are giving your clients quality service. If you visit a Dominican salon they still play their merengue and wave their flag with a salon full of black women. Concern yourself on healthy hair growth and not just the out come. You could benefit from learning this technique and applying it as such. This is your craft, your passion. You don't have to conform,,,but reform.
